The tower of the lords of Montmayeur in Aime

Square tower protected by an enclosure, such was the initial construction of this dungeon. During feudal times, the great families of lords shared the territory, and the Montmayeur Family, just like the Count of Savoy was a vassal of the Holy Roman Empire. Located at the bottom of the city, it controlled the river traffic of Isère. With the development of armaments, the medieval tower no longer fulfilled its defensive role. A main building, a turret housing a spiral staircase, and some interior fittings made this keep, at the renaissance, a pleasant residence. Abandoned over the centuries and finally bought by the town, it now houses exhibitions.

Chantemerle castle

Also called Saint-Didier castle, it is an old fortified castle, from the 11th and 12th centuries, in the Middle Ages, which was the center of the archiepiscopal châtellenie of La Bâthie, summer residence of the archbishops of Tarentaise. The ruins stand in the town of La Bâthie, between Moûtiers and Albertville.

Vulmix battery

This fort is a prohibition work built southwest of the Place de Bourg-St-Maurice at an altitude of 1050 meters. It is built on a plateau at the foot of the Roignais mountain range, between the torrents of the Arbonne and the Armente. Its role is to beat the Isère Valley upstream of Bourg-st-Maurice and to render unusable for the enemy the roads which emerge from the Versoyen valley (roads of the Col de la Seigne) and those which descend from the col from Petit St Bernard (roads which follow the right bank of the Reclus). This battery is protected by the Fort du Truc which prohibits the positions that the enemy could establish on the heights which dominate it.

The fort of Tamié

Large structure built at an altitude of 992 meters, east of Albertville, it monitors the outlets of the Col de Tamié and the rear of Place d’Albertville. When it was built, the fort had a small masonry barracks of low capacity, the rest of the crew were housed in tents within the walls of the fort. A new shell-proof barracks will be built in the rock of the rocky outcrop at the same time as the rock store. The fort of Tamié is the largest fort in the Séré de Rivières system before that of Dampierre in Langres.

The castle of the sires of Chambéry

Mentioned in the middle of the 11th century, it was at the origin of the city’s development. But it is difficult to define the aspect of the Poype, the first castle building. While keeping the role of a fortress, the castle is one of the favorite residences of the House of Savoy and the seat of the state administration (Trésor des Chartes, Resident Council, Chancellery, Accounts Chamber). Chambéry thus becomes the “capital” of the duchy.
